Residence 44 Quest : Walkthrough

Pitch

In 1999, two students — Jinwo Versluys and Rinze de Laat, from the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands — created a full adventure game in the pure Sierra On-Line tradition, set in their own student residence.

Residence 44 Quest is a fan-made game built with AGI Studio, the toolkit that lets you craft games in the spirit of Sierra's golden age classics — King's Quest III, Police Quest 1 — complete with their text-parser interface and characteristic EGA graphics.

You arrive by bicycle at Residence 44, a newcomer among its inhabitants. To earn your place and secure a room, you must complete various tasks for your future housemates. The tone is offbeat, the humor decidedly student-flavored — Leisure Suit Larry fans will feel right at home.

What makes this game genuinely charming is its authenticity. The creators drew directly from their own experiences, giving it an atmosphere unlike anything Sierra officially produced: less epic, more mundane — but surprisingly well-written for an amateur project.

dosbox.png

How to run the game

Like most AGI games of the era, simply launch it inside a DOSBox or DOSBox-X session (https://dosbox-x.com/). No special settings are required: just mount the folder and run SIERRA.COM.

As in every original Sierra game, pressing Escape show the game menu.

  • F1 : Help (Wait for nude lady ...)
  • F2 : Sound on/off
  • F3 : Repeat the last command (the Parrot button...)
  • F4 : Examine inventory stuff sierra_018.raw1.png
  • F5 : Save Game
  • F6 : Show elapsed played time
  • F7 : Restore Game
  • F9 : Restart the game (Again!!!)
  • TAB : Inventory
  • Four speed settings are available in the menu: Chill / Moron / Smooth / Caffeine
  • Alt-Z : Quit the game (Drink beer ...)
  • Ctrl-J : Joystick
Developer commands

The creators left a handful of debug commands active in the final release — a common habit among AGI developers of the era. You can type them at any point during the game:

  • fase — displays the current game phase ("fase een" or "fase twee")
  • coords — shows your character's current position on screen
  • flag N — checks the state of internal flag N
  • var N — checks the value of internal variable N
  • room N — jumps directly to room N
  • object N — gives you item N
  • mem — displays memory usage

These are harmless to use and quite handy if you ever get stuck — or just curious about what's happening under the hood. I only used fase while playing the first time.

Game

You start on Simons Street in Delft, Holland (Simonsstraat), looking for the legendary student house you've heard so much about. Your character can't move left or right here, and won't be flattened by a car even if you wander close to the road. The vocabulary on this first screen is deliberately limited.

ring bell (5 times until JOSINE is asked to open the door)

sierra_008.raw1.png

You're in — but it's dark, so look for the light switch on the right and flip it.

push switch

sierra_009.raw1.png

Head up the stairs to the second floor.

Second floor

sierra_010.raw1.png sierra_011.raw1.png

The rule here is simple: knock first, then enter once you're invited (ENTER!).

Johan's room

The door on the left leads to Johan's room. sierra_012.raw1.png

There's a guy panically walking up and down the room.

Talk to him and you'll learn he can't find his tie and is running late for a reception. While you're here, have a look around: the desk, the mirror, the bed, the phone (a list of 6 numbers), and the balcony through the door on the left.

sierra_013.raw1.png

Niels's room

sierra_016.raw1.png

The door on the right belongs to Niels. Everything in this room is huge. He's clearly a Heineken devotee — you can try offering him a beer. Talking to him reveals that he'd very much like to see stupid "SLUT" Josine gone before he takes his nap.

talk man (3 times)

"Well," he responds, "in that case you'll have to get rid of that SLUT Josine. She's such a stupid SLUT, with her fat ass. I've never seen such a SLUT before in my whole life."

+10 points (10/144)

Feel free to examine the wall, the window, the fridge, the flag, and the closet. Nothing to collect here for now.

Left hallway

Head left and you'll reach the hall between the toilet and the kitchen.

On your left, you see a door and from it comes an incredibly bad smell. It must be the toilet. Straight ahead, you find the kitchen... and from it comes an incredibly bad smell as well!

sierra_019.raw1.png

Kitchen

sierra_020.raw1.png

The kitchen is filthy. Pick up the jar from the table and the crap from the bin.

take jar

+4 points (14/144)

take crap

+4 points (18/144)

take lighter

no point, but useful to have

Have a look at the list on the right and the cooker hood on the left.

The cooker hood has a cooker hood filter inside it and there's a seductive little button on it.

Look at the button:

The little button starts smiling en calling: "PRESS ME! YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO! PRESS ME!"

Easter Egg (save first if you prefer)

Switching on the hood fan will suck you straight up the chimney. No point penalty, no lasting damage — just a fun detour that drops you back on the street.

This is one of two easter eggs in the game that send you back to the starting screen without any penalty. The AGI engine makes this kind of "soft reset" surprisingly easy to implement, which is probably why Sierra's own developers used the same trick in several of their games. Here, it's clearly done with affection rather than malice — the animation of getting sucked up a chimney is genuinely funny.

sierra_021.raw1.png

Back in the kitchen, open the hood and grab the filter.

open hood
take filter

+4 points (22/144)

Now move to the right side of the kitchen.

Far end of the kitchen

sierra_027.raw1.png

Examine the window, the fridge, and the oven.

open oven

Holy Mozes! There's a tie in the oven!

take tie

+4 points (26/144)

Close everything up, then head back to the left hallway. (Drop the lighter here if you picked it up.)

Open the left door — that's the toilet.

Toilet

The toilet section is where the game's student humor reaches its peak. Most of these actions serve no purpose whatsoever for the plot — they exist purely because two twenty-something developers thought it would be funny, and honestly, they were right. The AGI parser accepts an impressive range of vocabulary here that we'll leave to your imagination.

sierra_036.raw1.png

Read the note on the wall, and take a look at the bin and the dispenser. You can piss and sit after lowering the seat.

lower seat
sit

The next four commands are strictly for players 18 and over 😎

think sex
look cock
jerk
clean cock
shit
clean ass
take paper

+4 points (30/144)

Eeeow...gross! That is SO revolting! You are despicable! OK...

stand
flush
open door

Return to Johan's room and give him back his tie.

give tie

+10 points (40/144)

"Hey! Thanks man! Where did you find it?" "In the oven!" "Oh yeah! I remember now! It was soaking wet with beer and I wanted to dry it quickly!" "Thanks! Here, hold this shaving cream for me, will you?" "You take the shaving cream from Johan. You have the slightest hunch that he is going to forget it..."

Talk to him a few more times before leaving — this matters for later progression.

talk man (a few more times)

Leave his room and head to the right hallway.

Second Floor - right hallway

On your way up, you'll pass through a small landing with a phone counter on a wooden box. A list next to it reveals that Rinze is the one racking up most of the bills.

look counter

The display reads 12.344 calls. These students clearly have a lot to say to each other.

sierra_038.raw1.png

Open the left door and step inside. Examine the room and the window (more than once).

Holy smoke! This room is very small! Luckily there's a window for your entertainment...

Look through the window a few times — the view keeps changing. First someone stealing a bike, then a girl from across the street getting undressed ("The gorgeous girl from across the street is getting…"), and finally this gem: "(Multiplayer version will be released June 2000)".

sierra_039.raw1.png

Head back to the stairs and climb to the third floor — enjoy the creaking steps.

Third Floor

You see two doors, a dartboard and a white closet.

The white closet in the corner is worth a look too — it holds some clothes and, inevitably, another computer.

"My god! Computers are everywhere in this house!"

sierra_040.raw1.png

Knock and enter through the door marked 44.

Rinze room (the nerd)

Talk to Rinze several times until he says:

Rinze must be comforted, and that can be in many ways...

sierra_041.raw1.png

There are two ways to comfort him:

  1. Give him a beer
give beer

"People carying beer. I like those! Thanks"

+4 points (44/144)

  1. Give him a blowjob — save your game first, as this one resets your score entirely.
donate blowjob

A word of warning: unlike most bad decisions in Sierra games, this one comes with no dramatic death screen and no invitation to restore. The game simply resets your score to zero and carries on as if nothing happened. There is no way back short of reloading a save — which is exactly why the walkthrough told you to save first.

Oh boy, that's a good idea! ...think again buster...

points reset (0/144)

With Rinze suitably consoled, move close to the table and pick up what's on it.

take note

+2 points (46/144)

take pen

+2 points (48/144)

sierra_042.raw1.png

You can also examine the computer, the mirror, and the window for a neat easter egg:

YOU talking to me?....you TALKING to me?...you talking to ME?....

Before leaving, talk to Rinze a few more times — this is important for the game to progress.

talk man (several times)

"I'm making a game: 'Residence 44 Quest II -The Doocoock's clan strikes back-'."

As far as anyone knows, Residence 44 Quest II — The Doocoock's Clan Strikes Back was never released. Whether it was ever started remains a mystery. Some sequels are best left to the imagination.

Back in the third-floor hallway, the door on the right and the dartboard are out of reach for now. Follow the corridor to the left.

The three-doors hall

sierra_043.raw1.png

The first door opens freely — that's the shower.

Shower

Surprisingly clean in here.

sierra_044.raw1.png

get gel

+4 points (52/144)

You can take a shower by opening the tap if you feel like it. Then head back to the three-doors hall and knock on the middle door.

Jinwo's room

sierra_049.raw1.png

A fun detail worth noting: Jinwo Versluys and Rinze de Laat are not just the names of two characters in the game — they are the actual authors. The whole of Residence 44 Quest is drawn from their real student life at the TU Delft residence, which makes meeting your housemates feel oddly personal. You are, quite literally, doing favours for the people who built the game.

Examine the window, the TV, the mirror, and the clothes (twice).

look clothes
call jinwo
get clothes

+10 points (62/144)

Now talk to him repeatedly until he sighs:

talk man (until he says "Sigh....")

He's looking for his key — keep that in mind.

Back in the three-doors hall, knock on the third door.

Dirty noises raise up from behind the door... I've got a bad feeling about this. Better leave this door alone for now..."

Back to Johan's room

Now go back down and knock on Johan's door. If you see:

Johan had to go to a reception, remember ?

…you'll need to go back and speak some more to the other residents (excluding those who are asleep). Keep cycling through conversations until the game lets you in. This is the most finicky part of the game — patience is key.

sierra_052.raw1.png This is arguably the most frustrating moment in the game, and the one most likely to make you quit. The trigger for Johan's return depends on having fully exhausted the dialogue cycles of three different characters — Niels, Rinze and Jinwo — which the game never tells you explicitly. If any one of them still has an unheard line, Johan stays at his reception indefinitely. The rule of thumb: keep talking to everyone until they repeat themselves or go to sleep.

Eventually, Johan's door will open.

He'll be on the sofa when the phone rings.

sierra_053.raw1.png

Answer the phone — it's Sjon, asking for Josine. Johan will prompt you to tell him she's seeing someone else, which convinces Sjon to break up with her.

sierra_054.raw1.png

You can now spread the good news to the other residents, then make your way to the door with the canal poster and slip a note under it.

write note

+4 points (66/144)

sierra_055.raw1.png

put message on door

sierra_057.raw1.png

Josine opens the door. You hand her the note, but she's entirely unbothered — she still has her AnalIntruder 2000™ to keep her company.

+4 points (70/144)

Talk to the other residents again; they'll have plenty to say about the AnalIntruder. You'll also notice that Niels is now awake.

Josine's window

All of this unlocks balcony access and, from there, Josine's window.

sierra_066.raw1.png sierra_061.raw1.png

At the window, use your four items in order to spell out a four-letter word:

dash toilet paper
spray cream
dash crap
spray gel

+2 points (72/144) +2 points (74/144) +2 points (76/144) +2 points (78/144)

The four items combine to paint a single word on Josine's window, one letter at a time: S-L-U-T. Toilet paper, shaving cream, garbage and shower gel — not the most conventional set of art supplies, but effective. Niels would approve.

sierra_068.raw1.png sierra_067.raw1.png

sierra_065.raw1.png

Once Josine is standing at the window looking baffled at your artwork, you can try a more direct approach — if you have the gun in your inventory:

shoot josine

"YES! Finally! Aim carefully now!…"
"Click"
"FUCK!"
"Click"
"SHIT!"
"Click"
"DAMN!"
"Register your version of 'Residence 44 Quest' now!"
"Send $10 to Simonsstraat 44, 2628 TH, Delft, the Netherlands and receive your bullets within four weeks!"

A classic Sierra shareware gag — and yes, that's the actual address of the residence.

Climb back down when you're done.

Talk to everyone again — they'll all be raving about smurfs for some reason, except Jinwo, who suggests finding an assassin.

"Maybe, if you could find an assassin, but hey... where are you going to find such a criminal?"

Erik's room

Erik's room is now accessible, but a couple of precautions are in order.

First, protect yourself from the smell by wearing the kitchen extractor filter as a makeshift mask.

wear filter

sierra_070.raw1.png

Second, don't touch the door so don't bother knocking — just kick the door in.

kick door

sierra_072.raw1.png

"Hi there! I'm Erik and I'm hungry," he replies.

sierra_073.raw1.png

He's hungry, but before worrying about that, check under the bed.

look under bed

You'll find Jinwo's spare key.

+4 points (82/144)

While you're here, trap the flies in your jar for later use.

open jar
(the flies goes in)
close jar

No points right now, but this is essential for the ending.

Keep talking to Erik — your conversations with him will unlock access to Josine's room later.

Now return Jinwo's key to him.

In Jinwo's room :

give key

+2 points (84/144)

He'll reward you with some darts. You can play at the dartboard in the corridor if you fancy a break (no points though).

Josine's room

Try knocking on Josine's door again — you should now be able to get in. Position yourself in front of the right-hand door (the one with the canal poster) before knocking. She'll be busy with her toy.

sierra_080.raw1.png

Have a look in the closet.

open closet

+4 points (88/144)

Inside you'll find a loaf of rye bread.

Note: You can try to fuck Josine (save first) but this will you exit the game abruptly after those messages : Lay the woman down by the fire and make sweet love to her! Okay buddy, you've asked for it!

Back to Erik's room

Return to Erik's room using the same filter-and-kick-door technique. Hand him the bread.

give bread

+4 points (92/144)

Chat with him next.

talk man

He'll start mulling over a bowling ball idea he's had in mind. Then he heads off to Josine's room and takes his time coming back.

sierra_097.raw1.png sierra_095.raw1.png

Now go and see what's become of Josine — and Erik.

sierra_100.raw1.png

Time to open the (jack)pot :

open jar

+54 points (146/144)

Yes, that exceeds the maximum score — but don't worry, it happened in a few original Sierra games too. Police Quest I can be completed with 246 points despite its stated maximum of 245, and Police Quest II has 306 points available against an announced ceiling of 300.

sierra_102.raw1.png sierra_101.raw1.png

sierra_104.raw1.png

"Oh my, the flies ate Josine."

"OH MY, THE FLIES ATE JOSINE!!"

sierra_108.raw1.png sierra_107.raw1.png

sierra_111.raw1.png sierra_110.raw1.png

sierra_113.raw1.png sierra_112.raw1.png

sierra_115.raw1.png sierra_114.raw1.png

Ways to die

The game has a few ways to cut your adventure short — save before experimenting.

The fusebox — On the ground floor, just inside the entrance, there's a tempting banknote wedged into the fusebox on the left wall. Don't touch it.

"Oh man, you really sucked big time!!..."

sierra_128.raw1.png

The stench — Enter Erik's room without wearing the filter and the consequences are immediate:

"FUCK! THE STENCH IS ENORMOUS!!"
"COUGH, COUGH, AARRGGLL"
"No one can survive that stench without protection….except Erik!"

sierra_117.raw1.png

Once dead, the game keeps running but ignores everything you type — except for a single Dutch reminder from the authors:

"Nee eikel, je bent dood! Je kan alleen je hopeloze toestand herladen of opnieuw beginnen!"

Which translates roughly as: "No dickhead, you're dead! You can only reload your hopeless situation or start over."

Josine — Both fuck josine and brutalize josine in her room trigger an instant and unceremonious game over. Save first.

Thanks

Residence 44 Quest was released in 1999 and has quietly circulated among AGI enthusiasts ever since. It never had a commercial release, a publisher, or even a proper readme file. What it has is a genuine sense of place — two students who knew exactly what they wanted to make, made it, and apparently had a great time doing so. Not many games can claim that, amateur or otherwise.

Thanks for reading the walkthrough — I hope you enjoyed the game as much as I did.

Michel.
